Species conservation measures for Margaritifera margaritifera (L.), (Margaritiferidae, Bivalvia, Mollusca) in Upper Austria
Abstract
The freshwater pearl mussel is endangered in most parts of its distribution area and in some areas already extincted. In Austria the species is highly endangered, and the number of individuals has been reduced by about 97-98% since the late 19th century. Most of the remaining populations are either over-aged or on the decrease. The aim of the project is to find out ecological key factors for the decline and to develop and implement measures within the catchment area to the protect the remaining population. The measures are also including artificial infection of host fishes and rearing of mussels to increase the number of juveniles. Most of the investigations are performed at the river Waldaist, which contains the biggest pearl mussel population in Austria. The resulting experiences should give a basis for specific measures in other river systems.
