CO2 Caritas Ethiopia
Abstract
The objectives of the project are research activities, expert consultation and accompaniment to Caritas and its local branch in Ethiopia to safeguard CO2 savings and sequestration targets in their project GREEN-RE. Besides sequestration targets, the project aims to improve the social and heath condition of Ethiopians. It will be implemented in spring 2017 in Ethiopia in Dugda woreda which is located in the East Shewa Zone, Oromia region, by their ethiopian partner “Ethiopian Catholic Church Social Development Coordinating Office in Meki” and will involve 2.252 housholds with a duration of five years. CO2 savings will be sold for a price of EUR 25,-- per tCO2 by “Klimaneutralitätsbündnis Vorarlberg” exclusively to companies which are part of their alliance. The Green-RE project entails four climate mitigation components: • an afforestation component • a safe drinking water activity (through Austrian technology Helioz) • improved cooking stoves • solar lighting component The BOKU Centre for Global Change and Sustainability (gW/N) and BOKU Centre for Development Research (CDR) will accompany and monitor the CO2 mitigation project targets, by developing, assessing and improving the project CO2 monitoring system. Besides that BOKU will support Caritas with trainings and capacity building, especially with regard to CO2 savings and sequestration, in order to capacitate Caritas staff to implement BOKU Carbon Sequestration Standards in the GREEN-RE project. Within this research project BOKU will develop several reports: • a desktop monitoring assessment report, based on real data provided by Caritas at project start. • A first monitoring assessment is planned four month after project start to gain experiences with CO2 monitoring and to support CA in the fine tuning of the project intervention. • Two monitoring missions and thereby two monitoring reports to assess the sequestered carbon emission reductions (tentatively three and five years after project start).
