Walmedinger Horn, Historical Avalanche Protection; Inventory Historical Stone Walls Vorarlberg 2017. Historical Routes in Vorarlberg; Pilot Study.
Abstract
The project ”Inventory of Historical Stone Walls in Vorarlberg”, which is in its ninth year by now, aims at research and documentation as well as preservation and maintenance of historical natural stone walls in municipalities of Vorarlberg. In 2017, the observed municipality is Mittelberg in the high alpine valley Kleinwalsertal. Thereby, the inventory will take its first step in the most northeastern region of Vorarlberg. This year the project emphasis on remarkable, over 100 year old stone walls to protect from avalanches. This constructions are characteristic elements of the mountain areas around Walmendinger Horn. As very old, long standing, complex avalanche protection measures in exposed terrain they play an important role for the locales. Due to their use as a preventing avalanche release and element of terracing steep slopes and gullies, the buildings are subjected to very high pressures for a long period. Beside the determination of different construction types, the focus lies on a condition assessment involving local circumstances as well as stone deposits. The documentation of construction and inventory of the walls in the municipalities are the basis for further analysis of the cultural landscape and detailed source research in order to classify their age and value. Based on this the project derives development goals and measure concepts for handling the historical elements of cultural landscapes. Planning and organizing an implementation project and carrying out the reconstruction of one of the researched objects should be the beginning of maintenance and conservation of the historic walls. In addition, the documentation of realised reconstruction objects in several regions of Vorarlberg (Rheintal, Walgau, Klostertal) as well as the inventory of historical routes and their accompanying natural stone walls in Montafon will take place. Benefits of the project This project is intended to contribute to a respectful, professional and foresighted dealing with cultural heritage in cultural landscapes and settlement areas. In addition to the inventory of preserved historical natural stone walls, particular attention is given to historical wall construction methods and the future maintaining and renewing measures.
