PlasticFreeDanube - Macroplastic in the river Danube
Abstract
About 80% of waste ending in the sea is estimated to come from land sources. As rivers are the main route for waste from land to sea the first step to understand how to reduce plastic waste in the sea is to investigate how these plastic waste reaches the sea. The project "PlasticFreeDanube" provides an overview on the transport of plastic waste in the river danube by summarising and evaluating data on plastic waste generation, treatment, littering and other input sources at the one hand and potential outtakes of plastic waste at hydro pwoer plants at the other hand by material flow analysis. Additionally possible regions with plastic accumulation will be identified. Within the project measures to prevent the plastic pollution within the river Danube will be debvelopped and implemented. Trainings on the topic will be developped and an internet plattform will provide all necessary information. The project idea was developed by following partners: Institute of Waste management and Institute for Hydraulic Engeneering and Hydraulic Modelling (BOKU University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences), viadonau (Wasserstraßenverwaltung des Bundes), National Park Donau Auen, Polymer Institute der Slowakischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und RepaNet.
