SuREmMa+ Sustainable Rivermanagement - Integrative Analysis of Hydropeaking mitigation measures in connection with the EU-Water Framework Directive - Biological Analysis

In order to generate and use hydropower sustainably and to achieve the climate goals, it is necessary to face the challenge of reaching the environmental objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive, without causing significant restrictions on the use of water in river stretches identified as "heavily modified”. Identifying reasonable and efficient solutions requires collecting and analysing facts and scientific data to understand the multidimen-sional underlying interactive effects. To this end, scientists, hydropower plant operators, and authorities have been cooperating for many years and have built a deep mutual understanding and acceptance of their different concerns. The previous study SuREmMa presents a method which allows to assess the ecological impacts of hydropeaking mitigation measures. Within the SuREmMa+ projekt this method should be applied to analyse specific catchments and river reaches as a basis to ensure the achievement of the targeted ecological status.
