Microbial Pedigrees of Leonardo da Vinci drawings
Abstract
The biological information derived from the microbiome can help to answer crucial questions that may arise when dealing with valuable objects. A microbial pedigree can help to: • certificate the authenticity of an object, • to identify the biological material and microbial species of an artefact, • to get insights into the geographical origin of an artefact, • to get insights into the travel history of an object and into the storage conditions, • to group objects of unknown origin, • to decipher the usage of an object. The samples for performing microbial pedigrees will be provided by the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro e la Conservazione del Patrimonio Archivistico e Librario. Up to 6 cotton swabs or membrane samples will be taken from each object and will be pooled into one microbial pedigree analysis.
