Verification of the sponge city concept in combination with the Viennese "dual system"
Abstract
In order to counteract the future negative effects of temperature development in the city due to rising summer temperatures, the philosophy of the "sponge city" is to be implemented in Vienna. Therefore, a dual drainage system with tree plantations according to the "Stockholm principle" will be established in the Pelzgasse. The street runoff is led into a shaft which is connected to the sewer via a throttle. When the water level in the shaft rises, the incoming water is diverted into the "coarse sublayer" of a tree plantation and the sewer. The principle of discharging surface water directly into the subsoil is intended to increase the vitality of the trees and to cut off the peaks of discharge to the sewer. In this way, the chloride-contaminated road sewage in winter, which is less in quantity, should be discharged without harming the rootzone of the trees.
