Developing combined electrophoretic and dielectrophoretic purification of nanoparticles, viruses and proteins
Abstract
Purification of nanoparticles of synthetic or biological origin is challenging, as their properties often are not similar to other molecules in the environment. We propose a new device that solves current problems in the application of electrophoretic separation. By a novel geometry, we can vastly increase the throughput of the separation of nanoparticles and macromolecules. This geometry allows synergistically applying electrophoretic and dielectrophoretic forces in a continuous flow while suppressing thermoelectric effects and electroosmotic flow. The device that will be the result of this project will be of direct application in diverse fields of scientific and industrial importance, including the PhD project of the applicant, focused on polymer-coated core-shell nanoparticles for novel composites.
