River Sounds (RiSo) - Effects of underwater soundscape on fish and benthic invertebrates
Abstract
Organisms have developed a variety of methods to gather, process and react to information on their environment. Besides e.g. visual and tactile information, auditory perception presents an important source of information. Results from previous studies, although mainly conducted in marine and in deep-water environments, emphasize that auditory signals are influencing aquatic biota. Clear ecological/behavioral responses of various organism groups towards habitat associated sounds were discovered. Recent publications provided further indications that auditory information might also carry important information for spatial and temporal orientation in river ecosystems. Apart from natural soundscapes, human activities have increasingly added artificial sounds to the riverine environment. Several studies emphasizes that there is an urgent need to study the role of sound of freshwater biota and to develop a better understanding of the ecological impact of anthropogenic noise. The overall objective is to analyze selected anthropogenic acoustic signals and how they affect riverine life. The study will be conducted in a semi-natural experimental setup.
