Development of DPO accounts for UN IRP Global Material Flows Database
Abstract
The International Resource Panel (IRP) was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2007 to build and share the knowledge needed to improve our use of resources worldwide. For that reason, the IRP investigates the world’s most critical resource issues with a view to developing practical solutions for government policymakers, industry and society. The Panel’s goal is to steer us away from overconsumption, waste and ecological harm to a more prosperous and sustainable future. Their reports distil the latest scientific, technical and socio-economic findings around global resource use. In 2016, the IRP published an online Global Material Flows Database (GMFDB) that is publicly available at www.resourcepanel.org/global-material-flows-database. The database covers direct and consumption-based material flow indicators for seven world regions and for more than 185 countries and provides strong support to informed decision-making by policy and business communities. This project is aimed at updating and extending the scope of the GMFDB. The Institute of Social Ecology (SEC) is being engaged to deliver one of the nine main activities under that SSFA, which is a technical assessment of the requirements and feasibility for an extension of the GMFDB to include output data (DPO) on waste and emissions, net additions to stocks, and waste potential.
