Hydropower For You
Abstract
The Hydropower for You proposal (Acronym: Hydro4U) addresses the sustainable development and exploitation of Central Asians (CA, i.e. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) unexplored small hydropower (SHP) potential with innovative European hydropower solutions considering future climate change, transboundary challenges and the Water-Energy-Food-Climate (WEFC) nexus. Hydro4U will specifically contribute to the UN sustainable development goals, namely clean, affordable and secure energy, climate action, zero hunger, economic growth, sustainable production and consumption, modernizing industry and infrastructure leading to clean water and sanitation, peace and partnerships. It supports CA to build a low-carbon, climate resilient future and is in line with the EU strategic directions expressed in the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), thus fostering a) cross-border water and energy management in the region, b) the relation between CA and the EU, c) the worldwide leadership of the European hydropower industry, and d) reduce gaps between borders and continents. Under the aspect of increasing water stress and increasing energy demands Hydro4U will employ demonstration activities (DA) and planning activities (PA) to elaborate, demonstrate and disseminate reproducible ecologically, economically and socio-politically sustainable solutions with a two-fold focus: 1) Low-head run-of-river SHP using the innovative hydro shaft power solution (HSPS) with a 400 kW DA at Badam (Kazakhstan) and 2) Medium-head SHP using the Francis-container power solution (FCPS) with a 2MW DA at Shakhimardan (Uzbekistan).
