Analysis of the collection rate of refrigerators and freezers
Abstract
The European Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) contains, among other things, requirements regarding the collection targets for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), which have thus also been incorporated into the national implementation, the Ordinance on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE Ordinance). Since 2019, there has been a statutory minimum collection rate of 65% for electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) of the average mass put on the market in the three previous years or, alternatively, 85% of WEEE generated. At 63%, the collection rate that has been in effect since 2019 was not achieved in Austria. It has already been apparent for several years that it is visibly more difficult to achieve this target. This results from relatively weak increases in total annual collection masses and comparatively strong increases in annual masses of electrical and electronic equipment put on the market. Nevertheless, it can be seen that in the category of refrigerators and freezers, the collection rate is relatively low compared to the other collection and treatment categories, at just under 43%. The aim of the project is to determine the reasons for the low collection rate for refrigerators and freezers, both on the disposal side and on the collection side, and to estimate the theoretical waste potential for refrigerators and freezers.
