Mainstreaming Ecological Restoration of freshwater-related ecosystems in a Landscape context: INnovation, upscaling and transformation
Abstract
MERLIN aims at demonstrating and promoting systemic solutions for upscaling landscape restoration in line with the European Green Deal actions. MERLIN will build on transdisciplinary collaborations to generate win-win solutions and multi-purpose usage that support local biodiversity while delivering a range of services and socio-economic benefits. To initiate the transformative change the European Green Deal promotes, systemic solutions for upscaling and mainstreaming restoration are needed to achieve the ambitious aims of recent environmental legislation. Nature-based solutions are indispensable to reach the Green Deal objectives, delivering wider socio-economic benefits including biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation. The most important steps of the envisaged transformative change regarding ecosystem restoration will be: • To re-shape the role of the public sector in restoration and nature-based solutions. The public sector is currently setting the targets (through legislation) and is the main financer of restoration actions. In the future, the public sector should increasingly enable the involvement of local stakeholders and the private sector by setting incentives encouraging engagement in restoration. • To transform attitudes to investments in restoration, i.e. to embed restoration of “natural capital” into the mindsets and activities of various economic sectors, recognising the multiple and sustained benefits healthy ecosystems provide. This includes raising private investments for restoration. • To upscale restoration through (1) performing large-scale measures where possible and to (2) smartly connect individual measures in a landscape context by designing catchment-scale restoration.
