Abstract
Capturing open space justice - Development of a tool set for the analysis of open space justice in cities taking into account vulnerable population groups. In addition to the involvement of all population groups in decision-making and implementation processes (procedural justice), open space justice requires the socio-spatially equitable distribution of usable green and gray open spaces in the urban area (distributive justice). Some European cities use target and characteristic values to ensure adequate green space provision. Although quantitative approaches to green space supply are effective argumentation tools for securing land, they do not automatically contribute to social equity. Quantitative supply analyses perceive green spaces as homogeneous units and say little about the actual accessibility and usability of all urban open spaces. Furthermore, they lack a differentiated approach to social groups. The research project seeks solutions for this and addresses the following questions: - How can small and medium-sized cities efficiently analyze the provision of open space in urban areas and include gender-, age- and group-specific demands? - How can open spaces be differentiated according to type of open space and evaluated with regard to their group-specific qualities? - How can potentials for more open space justice be identified from the supply analyses and measures for future urban development be derived? The tool set enables cities to take a systematic approach in the differentiated analysis of open space justice and can contribute to open space-friendly urban development.
