Innovations for existing pig rearing and fattening barns in Austria (IBeSt) for the wellbeing of animals and humans - WP Farmers
Abstract
Most of the pigs in Austria are kept in conventional systems which comply with to the legal minimum requirements. The aim of the project is to identify innovative approaches for these existing pig barns which enable improvements for animal welfare and for the environment. The project includes work packages on animal welfare, stable climate/environment and the farm family. In this work package 'farmers', the focus is on supporting the participating farmers. A continuous process of reflection is organized with the farmers which will meet in a series of workshops. The effects of the barn redesign with regard to changes in functionality, the management challenges, and the quality of work will be discussed. Workshops will also be designed to engage in reflections on the ethical dimension of animal rearing; and to strengthen farmers' communication skills so that they can act as ambassadors for quality of life (for humans and animals) in discussions with colleagues and consumers.
