Europeanization of the Plastic Pirates Citizen Science Initiative
Abstract
Plastic Pirates – Go Europe! is a citizen science initiative to investigate plastic waste pollution with special focus on plastic and microplastic. Using a large-scale citizen science approach in rivers, young people gather research data. The main objectives of the initiative are to gain scientific knowledge on the origins and pathways of plastic pollution, raise environmental awareness, proactively engage and empower different actors to act (students, teachers, municipalities, research centres, NGOs, sports clubs, scout associations, fishing clubs etc.), and increase the scientific as well as ocean literacy of the participants. Thus, the initiative combines citizen science and excellence in research. Practically, young people interested in science and the environment are given the opportunity to play a hands-on role in research and gather data used for actual science.
