Feasibility Study for a WebGIS based Hydrological Atlas of Austria
Abstract
The Hydrological Atlas of Austria was published in the years 2003 to 2007. Since the last delivery, new contents have been developed by different institutions, many of the previous maps would have to be updated. The digital version of the HAÖ was last developed in 2007 for the Windows versions of that time. It now supports current Windows versions only to a limited extent and other operating systems (e.g. Mac OS or Linux) not at all. The appearance and functionality also no longer meet the expectations for the presentation of map-oriented content. New technical possibilities offer, especially on the Internet, additional and powerful publication possibilities on all common platforms and could especially support the so far not fully achieved goal of educational institutions and public relations. Therefore, the aim of this project is to verify the feasibility for a WebGIS-based Hydrological Atlas of Austria (HAÖ 2). This is intended to provide access to new, Austria-wide topics for a broader (professional) public in the interest of both the authors and the public. The updating of some topics or data sets already included in the HAÖ, the use of new information technologies for a more attractive dissemination of the contents and the addressing of new user groups shall be ensured. Furthermore, the integration of innovative cartographic forms of representation to increase a sustainable knowledge gain of the users, as well as the establishment of the HAÖ as a permanent medium for the dissemination of nationally developed hydrological and water management research results should be carried out.
