UniNetz - Life on Land (SDG 15)
Abstract
Building on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), all Member States committed at the UN Summit in New York in September 2015 to work towards the implementation of the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at international, national and regional level by 2030 ("Agenda 2030"). The European Union (EU), which sees itself as a driving force in the development of the 2030 Agenda, is committed to implementing the SDGs in both its internal and external policies. In Austria, all federal ministries were committed to the coherent implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 and the SDGs in a Council of Ministers decision of 12 January 2016. Austria presented its National Implementation Report 2020 to the UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York. With the Memorandum of Understanding 2018 and the Cooperation Agreement 2019, in the project UniNEtZ - Universities and Sustainable Development Goals (UniNEtZ) initiated by the "Alliance of Sustainable Universities in Austria" ("Alliance"), 16 universities, forum n as well as the Federal Geological Survey have joined forces and committed to the goals, (1) to generally strengthen inter-university interdisciplinary cooperation, (2) to present an "Options Report on the Implementation of the SDGs in Austria" in the medium term by 2021, (3) to make a significant contribution to sustainable development in Austria in the long term, and (4) to anchor sustainable development in teaching and research at universities. The present project pursues these goals for SDG 15. SDG 15 is a comprehensive goal aimed at the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of all terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their species. Its wording and the formulation of its twelve targets highlight specific ecosystems and threats. This gives special emphasis to specific challenges and ecosystems without excluding other relevant challenges and ecosystems. To develop the options, sub-working groups are formed for the individual problem areas and the respective options are developed in small group meetings. These will be discussed and consolidated in three to four working group workshops. Key stakeholders and members of other SDG working groups will be involved in the individual sub-working groups.
