Career Opportunities and career paths of Women in the Austrian Forestry and timber industry - Long-term Study
Abstract
Women working in forestry in various positions and fields of activity often experience stereotypical attributions and gender roles as obstacles to their careers in professional life. Accordingly, it is essential to promote women, to give them insight into everyday working life, and to inspire them for professions in the forestry and timber industry. Mentoring is a tool that contributes to the development of strategic career planning, the expansion of networks, the visibility of women as well as their job satisfaction and performance. The research project "Career Opportunities and paths of Women in the Austrian Forestry and timber industry - long-term study" initiates three mentoring rounds for women in the Austrian forestry and timber industry. For each round, 15 women and their mentors will be accompanied over one year. The participating mentees have the opportunity to learn from their mentors. They take part in further training and a career workshop. Similarly, the training of the mentors on "gender-reflective mentoring" is an important component of the program. This provides the mentors with a broader understanding of gender and the advancement of women in the forestry and timber industry. This knowledge potentially impacts their institution and is an impetus for further measures for the advancement of women and equal opportunities, the keyword "gender mainstreaming". In addition to the mentoring rounds, the evaluation of the effectiveness of the program as a contribution to the advancement of women and equal opportunities for all is a central part. In the form of a participatory process, suitable indicators are developed, which are collected and critically examined in the course of the evaluation. The objectives of the project are to contribute to the empowerment and promotion of (young) women for the enrichment of the forestry and timber sector (mentoring courses, further training offers) and to expand awareness of the topic of women's advancement, equal opportunities, and gender dimensions in the Austrian forestry and timber sector, in science, administration and the private sector (training of mentors). The integration and networking of central actors (Advisory Board) should contribute to the long-term implementation of women's mentoring and its anchoring in existing institutions.
