Effects of different methods of prophylaxis and therapy for coccidiosis in broilers in organic farming.
Abstract
An alternative prophylactic and therapeutic method based on homeopathy and phytotherapy (AM) was tested in comparison with the supplementation of the diet with a conventional coccidiostat (CM). The one year-investigation was conducted under field conditions on 11 farms. Based on animal performance and health status, the investigated method was judged and discussed in detail. The most important results are: No significant differences were found between the two groups for any criterion of growth performance. However, there was a tendency towards better daily weight gain for AM. Mortality for AM was clearly higher than for CM. Clinical and excreta examination showed a higher incidence of coccidiosis in AM. The opposite was found at the dissection of the intestines. Both CM and AM were directly compared on one farm in order to separate the effects of method and environment. For this situation the results were basically the same as given above. The magnitude of the enviromental effect (i.e. great differences between investigated farms) clearly indicate the need for generally improved management.
