Study of structural features of landscape ecology as indicators for sustainable land use.
Abstract
This project is part of the scientific programme 'Sustainable Development of the Austrian Cultural Landscapes', module group 'Indicators of sustainability', research module 'space oriented top-down planning indicators' of the Ministry of Science and Traffic. Starting from the model conception that the landscape is composed of 'landscape elements' (ecosystems) which are internally homogeneous, but differ from each other, this work tries to discern the landscape elements at different scales in satellite images and to extract structural features and ecologically relevant attributes from the images. An automated and hence objective method for assessing the landscape elements is developed.
