Hydraulic, Sedimentological and Ecological Problems of Multifunctional Riparian Forest Management
Abstract
Floodplain forests are a protection against riverbank failure and erosion, they form a natural habitat for animals and plants, improve water quality and they are self-regenerating natural resources. Moreover, riparian forests and wetlands serve as recreational areas for nearby residents and therefore, enhance the quality of living. All over Europe different types of measures are planned or under construction leading to a restoration of floodplains and to the installation of new flood retention areas. This project examines the influence of riparian forests on flow discharge, sediment transport within the vegetation and the bank stability of vegetation against erosion. Therefore, various riparian forests of different types and stages of succession will be examined and classified at the River Rhine near Breisach (GER), Enz (GER) and at the soil bioengineering test flume at the Wienfluß (AUT). With the results of the field measurements lab models will be built and experiments will be carried out to study the influence of the different types of riparian forests on the discharge. In these models different maintenance works and management strategies of the bank vegetation will be simulated and studied. Finally, the influence of different types of riparian forests on flow discharge will be calculated in a numerical model. The aim of the project is to work out guidelines for the implementation and management of new bank vegetation and floodplain forests concerning the effect of forests on flow discharge, sediment transport and the riverbank stability.
