Management Programme for the River Mur, a 6th order stream in Styria/Austria
Abstract
The River Mur is one of the large rivers in the cultural landscape of Austria. Traditional anthropogenic uses have altered the physical environment as well as the fishfauna of the river system. Hydromorphological and fishecological investigations as well as aerial photograph aided land use mapping demonstrate the high restoration potential and provide data for defining management targets. The final results of the study provide a management programme for the River Mur, which focuses on the restoration of the riverine landscape, including large floodplain areas. Because of the longitudinal and lateral dimension, this case study will serve as contribution to the Interegg IIIB- Alpine Space - Programme.
