Preparation and use of flavonoid extracts
Abstract
The genus Anthemis (Asteraceae) is a herbaceous plant widespread in Europe and locally known as "Färberhundskamille". Among the metabolic products, carotinoids and flavonoids are used as dyes for cloth which give brilliant yellow colours. The purpose of these pigments in plants are to protect cells and tissues against the potentially harmful effects of visible light, because they are efficient deactivators of singlet oxygen. In this context it is appropriate to discuss the polymethine as naturally occurring antioxidants in food systems. The project is divided into two sections: 1. Using different methods to analyse the total amount of flavanoids, as well as the composition of the flavanoid components of Anthemis tinctoria. 2. Making a comperisation between different methods for extracting and spray drying , particularly in evaluating yield, distribution of colour index and antioxitative capacity of the resulting product. The object of this project is, to produce standardised flavonoid extracts, which satisfy the claims of the textile- and food industries. Furthermore this work should be regarded as one possibility to initiate ongoing research in no energetic use of renewable sources.
