The role of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) in organic farming systems to develop soil fertility under consideration of different strategies of crop management and influence of long term cultivated soils on AM under the conditions of organic farming.
Abstract
The system specific crop rotations, fertilization and tillage in organic farming have positive effects on the development of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and on the colonization of the crop plants by these fungi. These positive effects were shown in numerous comparative investigations about the effects of agricultural practices in conventional and organic farming systems. When the input of agrochemicals into the environment is the aim for the future, a higher attention must be dedicated to the meaning of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. In order to use the positive effects of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in agricultural production systems, the use of suitable fertilizers in adequate quantity, a maximal renouncement of pestizides and an appropriate crop rotation with a minimum of tillage and the avoidance of black fallow is to be guaranteed. In this project the influence of agricultural practices (crop rotation, fertilization, tillage) as well as the duration of organic farming on the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is investigated in field trials. The target of this project is to optimize the life conditions and performances of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in organic farming systems to support plant growth and to ensure adequate yields.
