The EU Water Framework Directive: Clarification, by means of case studies, of the application of the Directive to heavily modified bodies of water
Abstract
The project is part of an EU-project of the DG Environment for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Our contract is part of the Austrian contritution coordinated by the UBA. The total project is coordinated by Great Britain and Germany and is designed for 2 years. The designation of so called "Heavily Modified Water Bodies (HMWB)" and specific treatment of HMWB is a key issue of the WFD. The development of an assessment method for hydrologically and/or morphologically heavily modified water bodies (impounded, channelised) and its validation by means of case studies at the Bregenzerach, the Danube upstream of Vienna and the Vienna River is intended.
