Interactions between transgenic/non-transgenic Prunus spp. and phytopathogens, aphids and natural enemies of aphids
Abstract
In an accompanying project, the Institute of Plant Protection studies the potential influence of transgenic trees on phytopathogenic, phytophagous and predaceous organisms and thus contributes to assessing the ecological risk of transgenic plants. Two major questions are addressed: (1) Does the genetic modification of the plants affect their susceptibility to bacterial and/or fungal pathogens. (2) Does the genetic modification of the plants affect the interactions among host plant, aphids and ladybird beetles, the natural enemies of aphids. Revealing the potential changes in the susceptibility of transgenic plants to bacterial and fungal diseases may help to avoid new plant protection problems. Elucidating the potential effects of transgenic plants on survival, development, and reproduction of pest organisms, i.e. aphids, and of a beneficial organism, i.e. the two-spotted ladybird beetle, is a major objective of the project. Overall, the project of the Institute of Plant Protection is an important component in the safety assessment of transgenic stone fruit trees.
