Survey on the epidemiology of cannibalism and feather pecking in alternative laying hen husbandry in Austria
Abstract
Feather pecking and cannibalism represent severe problems in alternative systems for laying hens. In the case of severe cannibalism, the consequences of these behavioural disorder may include the death of a relevant percentage of animals in the flock. This also leads to economic losses due to lower rate of lay, increased mortality and feed costs. In this project, the status quo will be described and factors will be analysed which are likely to be involved in feather pecking and cannibalism, such as husbandry, pullet management, feeding and genetic strain. Behaviour of pullets and laying hens will be monitored and prophylactic and therapeutic measures will be investigated.
