Heat collectors, gardening and quality of life: Investigation of effects on root growth and soil microbiology
Abstract
Heat collectors inevitably decrease the temperature in the surrounding soil. This project aims at investigating the effects of heat collector systems on root development of garden plants and soil microbiology. Soil samples will be collected from the surrounding of heat collectors in various gardens and from reference sites for subsequent analysis of soil mcirobiological characteristics. Root growth as dependent on soil temperature will be assessed quantitatively in a rhizobox experiment to obtain information on possible inhibitions in the vicinity of heat collector systems. The results are expected to have practical relevance for the develpment of guidelines and recommendations.
