Innovative solutions for improved processing of Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) with red heartwood
Abstract
The projects aims at improving the international competitiveness of European hardwood industries by an integrated, transnational research approach. The overall objectives are to optmise the processing of beech logs containing red heartwood, to develop grading devices for red heartwood timber and to develop high-value products. The various research topics are survey on existing technologies relevant for the project, optimising the sawing of roundwood by automated grading, using a prototype optoelectronic system, homogenising the appearance by optimised steaming and drying regimes as well as by UV treatment and developing innovative products such as "Thermal Wood ", glue-lam beams and furniture.
