Abstract
Security system for children on farm The main causes of child deaths and serious injuries on farms are mainly caused by vehicles or objects in agriculture. The potential of danger and necessary equipment is determined by the high numbers of moving farm machinery worldwide, around 35 million objects in agriculture. Effective measures are practical guidance on how to reduce these risks to children by raising the awareness of adults and adequate safety equipment. Children who died through the wheels of tractors or trailers were playing unsupervised, being carried as passengers on agricultural machinery, not under proper adult supervision, helping around the farm or trespassing a farm. The following activities with tractors are responsible for more than 75 % of fatal accidents: Tractors with a loaded trailer or another settled machinery moved or reversed and the child was crushed under the wheels. In these cases the driver could not see the child, even though he has been careful, observant and had used his reversing mirrors properly. One reason for this negative effect may be the changing dimension of tractors. Tractors get continuously bigger as well as heavier and the visibility for drivers becomes smaller. Safety equipment is not available which could be implemented by acceptable costs on farm machinery to control the presence of children as well as risks. A list of minimum requirements was defined for an effective technical solution. Available techniques will be used and adapted to build an effective and cheap warning system. Two main technical systems, short waves and wireless signal (radio), have been identified for developing the prototype which guarantees a security zone of 10 m around the farm machinery. Children wear a transponder which is integrated in a watch, bracelet or necklace. The features and field of activity of the prototype will be tested in detail. It should guarantee the long-term aim, which is the significant reduction of child deaths and injuries from activities with moving vehicles in agriculture.
