Investigation of the orographic characteristics of the monitoring sites Schauinsland and Freiburg and their influence on the accuracy of adjoint atmopheric dispersion calculations
Abstract
The German Federal Office of Radiation Protection is operating monitoring stations for airborne radioactivity at the sites of Freiburg im Breisgau (270 m) and Schauinsland (1200 m), a nearby mountain-top station. The questions to be studied are how well different model set-ups are able to simulate the influence regions (source-receptor relationships) for these two station in orographically complex terrain, how different these regions are for the two stations, and how all this depends on the meteorological situation. The calculations arecarried out with FLEXPART as the dispersion model, used in backward mode. Meteorological input comes, on one hand, from ECMWF, and on the other hand from nested simulations with MM5 nudged to ECMWF analyses. Results will also be compared with fields of regard calculated by the CTBTO/PTS.
