StartClim2005.C3a: Impacts of climate change on agricultural pests and antagonists in organic farming in Eastern Austria
Abstract
In this project it will be investigated if and how far the recent obvious changes in composition and abundance of pests and beneficials in organic farming of Austria can be attributed to climate change. The literature will be evaluated for known correlations between climate change phenomena and pest incidence focussing on Eastern Middle Europe. Furtheron, historical pest outbreaks in Austria will be investigated for their climatological background. Existing data sets concerning distribution and abundance fluctuations of relevant pests will be surveyed. In case studies, for two selected pest species suspicious for climate dependent changes distributional maps will be made and correlated with climate maps. In the third part of the project a methodological approach towards long-term monitoring for climate caused faunistic changes in arable production will be conducted aiming at risk avoidance of climate related pest calamities.
