Doctoral School Sustainable Development - Individual Horizons for Sustainable Planning and Decision Making.
Abstract
The global scale of climate change implies both threats and opportunities. As a global challenge it applies to the overall socio-ecological earth system, hence it interacts with a variety of sectors in human economy. Due to the interrelatedness and complexity associated with global change, so far tacit and thus unexpected interactions among functional spheres of society are likely to crop up. Developing proactive structures for planning and decision making on the part of entrepreneurs, calls for critically revising traditional decision factors and indicators. The scope of environmental transformations and the involved demand for societal transition, resulting from current state of scientific knowledge, suggests that the horizons of strategic planning and decision making will have to be extended significantly. At the same time the long range of climate change implies a opportunity: recognising global change at an early stage allows for developing proactive adaptation strategies in time.
