Abstract
In the globalized wine market and against the background of climatic changes there is an urgent need for action for a long-term successful market positioning of wines from the Austrian state Burgenland. Also due to the recent specifications from the EU for wines with protected designation of origin it is necessary to investigated the site specific quality potential of vineyards in the Burgenland, in order to produce competitive, manually produced, authentic wines of high quality with a world wide distinctive region-specific character. Methodically it is planned to implement the project aim stepwise on the basis of several work steps (moduls). 1st Work step (2008-2010): Crosslinking of already existing data of diverse sources, such as geology, soil science, climatology, catastral map, GIS, berry maturation parameter, wine awards of the state Burgenland, official emblem checknumber… 2nd Work step (2008-2013): Characterization of natural units of area and investigation of quality potential at representatively chosen (appr. 200) significant sites. Collection of all vine- and vineyard-specific performance characteristics and of the interaction between nature (soil, site, climate…) and human (vine cultivation, winemaking). 3rd Work step (2010-2013): Focusing on authenticity, characteristic and specifics of the region in wines of the Burgenland by investigation of certain parameters.
