MUBIL III – Evaluation, Subproject: Documentation and evaluation of the sustainability of organic farming drawing on the example of the monitoring farm “Rutzendorf”
Abstract
The organic cultivation of the biofarm “Rutzendorf” is described and assessed in this subproject by criteria of sustainability. Stock-less organic fertilisation systems versus farmyard manure recycling are studied on sites with different soil quality. In cooperation with the Center of Life and Food Sciences Weihenstephan – TU München (Lehrstuhl für Ökologischen Landbau und Pflanzenbausysteme), nutrient and energy balances are calculated based on the yield and cultivation data of the farm, examined in the concurrent realized MUBIL III research project. With the results of the calculations long-term developments of carbon and nitrogen cycles can be illustrated and sustainability and environmental effects of the organic farming system can be assessed. The contribution of organic farming to preserve and improve soil quality and to mitigate negative climate-relevant effects can thereby be valuated. The results are used for the evaluation of Agri-environmental measures (ÖPUL) of the Austrian Rural Development Programme 2007-2013. The subproject is responsible for the coordination of the overall project MUBIL III – Evaluation and, in cooperation with the subproject “MUBIL meta-database and web-portal”, for reporting and data preparation.
