Abstract
Flood risk is commonly recognized as being caused by river overflow, although large damages are caused by high groundwater levels. The estimation of extreme groundwater levels and their exceedance probabilities by statistical extreme value analysis has to consider multi-year memory of groundwater hydrographs as well as spatial correlation of near-by sites. In this project, groundwater monitoring sites will be classified and adapted methods for the estimation of extreme levels will be developed. Software implementations of these methods will be available to the hydrological services in Austria.
