Abstract
In a fumigation trial the efficacy of nitrogen against the granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius), the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) and the saw-toothed grain beetle (Oryzaephilus surinamensis) in organic rye stored in a non-hermetic concrete silo is investigated. Aims of the study are (i) to assess the effectiveness of an inert gas for stored product pest control, (ii) the determination of the nitrogen consumption to maintain a permanent nitrogen atmosphere, and (iii) to calculate the dimension of a nitrogen generator in a commercial grain storage facility.
