Silvicultural Guidelines for the management of selected forest types in the ecoregion 4.1 in the course of the forest typology Tyrol
Abstract
In the course of the Project VOLE silvicultural guidelines will be developed for selected forest types occurring in Northtyrol in the inneralps in close co-operation with local foresters. Local experiences and experiments, existing literature and existing concepts so far available will be used to work out the guidelines. A handbook of practice for the local foresters is to be provided which allows to identify relevant information about all forest types like climate, location, soil, geology, vegetation, inventory characteristics, development and management (e.g. tree species recommendations, tending concepts). As a basis for the guidelines the present actual condition (current vegetation) and the desired future conditions, which is derived from the PNWG (potential natural vegetation) and special forest functions (e.g. avalanches, stone guards). In the context of the project the project partner WLM Tirol is responsible for the forest classification, whereby on the way of a GIS supported geoecological model a forest site classification map is provided. The model permits a classification of the forest types based on digital geoecological parameters (e.g. height above sea level, substrate, land form, inclination). Based on the map of the forest site classification and desired future conditions management recommendations for the forest types of Tyrol are given.
