Improved crop monitoring through combined use of SPOT-VGT and PROBA-V data sources
Abstract
For operational users of medium resolution NDVI imagery such as JRC-MARS, the improved GSD provided by PROBA-V can only be fully exploited if the SPOT-VGT archive (from 1998 onwards) can be made comparable of what can be extracted from PROBA-V. The proposed research project addresses this transition phase issue with the main objective being the development and evaluation of several region-based unmixing, weighting and disaggregation schemes. Through unmixing, the crop’s contribution to the recorded signal can be enhanced while at the same time a back-comparability with archived SPOT-VGT data is maintained. This back-comparability is necessary at least unless a sufficient large image archive at 300 m (through PROBA-V and its successors) is build up, allowing the calculation of the LTA at this resolution. For enhancing the crop’s contribution to the recorded signal (backwards to the start of the SPOT VGT program and for any new PROBA-V imagery), the project analyzes different unmixing, weighting and disaggregation schemes relying on PROBA-V derived land cover maps at 300 m resolution. With the land cover mapped at this resolution it is possible to constrain the inversion of the archived (SPOT) 1 km data. The crop signal directly extracted from 300 m PROBA-V will also permit a straightforward evaluation of the effectiveness and cost efficiency of the various unmixing approaches for simultaneously acquired 300 and 1000 m PROBA-V data. This will allow proposing a candidate unmixing method for later operational use. Also, to some extent, the reference signal from 300 m data can be used for removing any (systematic) biases in the unmixed agricultural signals.
