From selection against inbreeding to selection against inbreeding and for performance:Optimum Contribution Selection Program for endangered livestock breeds
Abstract
Breeders of animals of highly endangered livestock breeds are currently provided with suggestions of mating partners by the breeding organization, in order to minimize inbreeding of prospective offspring based on pedigree information. These suggestions are binding. As quite a few of these populations are expanding in numbers, a new way of providing mating suggestions will be developed in the project, combining selection for genetic merit in production traits with avoidance of inbreeding. Different versions of optimum contribution selection are tried and tested for Murbodener cattle and Kärntner Brillenschaf, a sheep breed.
