StartClim: Gender Impact Assessment in the Context of Climate Change Adaptation and Natural Hazards (GIAClim)
Abstract
The project „Gender Impact Assessment in the Context of Climate Change Adaptation and Natural Hazards” (GIAClim) focuses on the gender dimensions of natural hazards like mud slides and floods caused by intense rain which have increase in frequency in Austria due to climate change. Exemplified by case studies, this project assesses gender relevant aspects in (planning) strategies and policies to avoid and minimize climate change impact. The project comprises of an analysis of decision making and participation processes regarding their gender impact. The researchers evaluate all steps of a decision making and planning process, from the strategy development to the implementation of measures and their impact. In addition, the project includes a gender specific survey of the perception of natural hazard and climate change. The project team applies a Gender Impact Assessment, a ex-ante assessment of strategies and adaptation measures to climate change and natural hazards. The assessments and surveys will inform a planning tool specifically drafted to address and take into account the gender dimensions in regards to climate changes and natural hazards.
