Hydrographic surveying
Abstract
Hydrographic surveying Project - Prehistoric pile dwelling at Lake Mondsee (Austria) A test of high end hydrographic surveying equipment of different manufacturers were carried out at the prehistoric pile dwelling “See” at Lake Mondsee (Austria), regarding high-resolution echo sounding and detection of embedded archaeological objects. Special attention was given to the parametric narrow-beam sub-bottom profiler (SBP) Innomar SES2000 quattro. This recently developed device consists of four transducers arranged as a line array of one meter length for high across-track data density. Data gridding of about 160 SBP-echograms resulted in a 3D volume model (voxel model) with a grid cell size of 25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm. This uniform lattice can now be visualized in 3D with any common volume rendering program. Project Traunsee: "Morphological investigation of the mass movement deposit of Gschliefgraben in Lake Traunsee, Austria" Within this hydrographic surveying project three types of echo sounding systems will be used to obtain a good data base A narrow-beam parametric sub-bottom profiler (Innomar SES-2000) will be used to visualise sediment structures. For combined sub-bottom and sidescan surveys the sub-bottom profilers (SBP) with integrated dual-frequency sidescan sonar (SSS) will be used. An advanced multibeam echo sounder with extremely high resolution and dynamically focused beams (Kongsberg EM3002) will be used for a detailed mapping of the lake bed’s morphology. A narrow single beam echo sounder will be used for high accurate depth measurements of the sea bed along predefined profiles. This data are the main source for monitoring the mass movement deposit of Gschliefgraben.
