Optimization of rations for dairy cows to reduce the use of foods potentially edible to humans (cereal grains, pulses) under Austrian organic agriculture conditions
Abstract
1) Supplementation of forage-based rations with concentrates, that include reduced amounts of or no components such as cereal grains and pulses, which could be eaten directly by humans. 2) Optimization of responses based on the complementary effects of various concentrate mixtures. 3) Estimation of the potential of new concentrate mixtures with regard to food balance in organic dairying, when the use of concentrate components is drastically reduced which could be eaten directly by humans. 4) Substantial contribution to food security through a yield-oriented partitioning of plant resources („crop partitioning to food and residue“ Wedin et al. 1975) in the light of shrinking globally available resources in general and the increasing competition for arable land for the production of food in particular that have developed within the last decades.
