Abstract:
The impact of milking systems and modern milking parlors in dairy farming on men’s and women’s physical strain is little known. There is hardly any data available on the workload in milking parlors concerning the different work processes or the gender of the person milking. Therefore, this thesis aims to record and evaluate the physical strain during the entire milking process, looking at oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR) and metabolic rate (AkJ, Watt) of female and male milkers. The recording was conducted with a portable respiratory gas analysis system (MetaMax3B, Germany) and an ECG- and activity sensor (Movisens, Karlsruhe) on four dairy farms in Austria; eight subjects participated in the recording, four male and four female farmers aged from 45 to 52 years. The data was recorded during the milking process in the milking parlor types “side by side” and “herringbone swing-over.” For assessing the physical strain precisely, the entire milking process was divided into preparation work, milking and follow-up work; the results were analyzed and evaluated separately. The entire milking process was executed with an average oxygen consumption of 46.5l/h and a heart rate of 98 bpm, below the anaerobic threshold. In the preparation and follow-up work, this limit was exceeded. Generally, during the milking process, a moderate physical strain (32.4%) and a balanced metabolic rate (143watt/m2) were determined. The physical strain in female milkers was 9.2% higher than in male milkers throughout the entire process. Reduction of physical strain during preparation and follow-up work can be achieved through additional breaks, reduced work speed, division of labor and technical devices.
