- Abstract:
- The blockchain technology is a digital and emerging application, which has to be seen with high potential in modern economy. This technology can help to solve various problems along the agri-food supply chain, such as traceability, transparency, security and trust. In theory, the blockchain shows advantages in this context, but there are still several aspects to consider which are not fully resolved yet. By applying a SWOT analysis as a framework, the main features of the blockchain technology as application in the Austrian agri-food supply chain are outlined and described. The work examines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the technology in general and specifically for the agri-food supply chain. Strengths and weaknesses focus on the blockchain technology itself. Whereas the opportunities and threats focus on developments in economy, society or politics, which could promote or hinder the diffusion of the blockchain technology. The findings in literature in the theoretical part are compared with the findings of the empirical part, where a qualitative content analysis based on expert interviews was done. The expert interviews provided new insights in the challenges and opportunities of the future blockchain technology. The experts confirmed that currently there is no blockchain established in the Austrian agri-food supply chain.
