Abstract:
Due to the application of Steam Explosion pretreatment to lignozellulosic material an effective use of agricultural co-products for the provision of energy is possible. This type of pretreatment causes a chemical and physical change in biomass. However, this can result in the formation of impurities, which can inhibit the microorganisms of the ethanol fermentation. The aim of this work was to optimize the steam explosion pretreatment of wheat straw using glycerol for an integrated ethanol-biogas process. For this reason, the influence of a 5 or 10% glycerol addition to wheat straw samples in a steam explosion pretreatment on the ethanol yield and methane was investigated. For analyzing the influence of the pretreatment severity the steam explosion pretreatment was performed with temperatures of 180°C, 200°C and 220°C and residence times of 10, 15 and 20 minutes. Another goal was to compare the energy production of an integrated ethanol-biogas process to an exclusive production of biogas. The highest energy yield of 11.5 MJ/kg VS was produced by the sample 0gly/200°C /10min in an integrated ethanol-biogas production. There was no influence of glycerol addition observed on the energy yields of combined ethanol-biogas production and the sole production of biogas. The influence of pretreatment severity was found in the samples of the combined ethanol-biogas production, which was observed by a decrease in energy yields with increasing pretreatment severities. Overall, the variations of the combined ethanol biogas process produced 16% more energy as compared to the variations in the sole production of biogas.
