- Abstract:
- The objective of this thesis was to figure out and discuss problem areas and barriers to progress of biodegradable biopolymers derived from renewable biomass sources. The main focus of the study was placed on the Austrian vegetable market, which in recent years was characterized by an ever increasing use of product packaging made of plastic.
The assessment was conducted by means of guided expert interviews. Therefore, Austrian producers and packers at the beginning of the vegetable supply chain, as well as domestic food retailers were interviewed. These key players have a significant influence on the use of packaging materials. The gained interview data was evaluated following the qualitative content analysis of Mayring.
Substantial barriers were identified along the entire life cycle of biopolymers. Areas of concern arise with regard to the production of the raw materials, in the manufacturing process, in the use of biopolymers and also in the disposal of such materials. In terms of the current Austrian fresh vegetable market it can be concluded, that oil based plastics are substituted by biopolymers, if the higher material costs can be justified by an environmental added value.
