- Abstract:
- Corn cobs are a co-product in corn harvest with a hardly used potential so far. Due to their quantity and condition a material and thermal utilization might be possible. Aim of this study is to compare the three cob harvesting systems concerning the working-time requirement, the harvest quantities and losses as well as the quality of the harvested material. Further the storage and drying behaviour of cobs as well as the main factors that have direct effects on these subjects are a goal of this work. The major aim of this study is to evaluate the suitability and economic aspects of corn cobs as a fuel for small-scale combustion plants with a heat capacity of < 150 kW.
Therefore three different cob harvesting systems have been analysed. Subsequently to the harvest-survey the composition and the quality characteristics of the cob samples as well as the storage behaviour with different water contents and storage methods, the drying behaviour by thin layer drying and the flow resistance in relation to the particle size distribution have been investigated experimentally. To evaluate the suitability of corn cobs as a substitute fuel for wood chips combustion test at full and part load as well as long term test have been conducted.
The results show, that the combined corn and cob harvest result in a significantly increase of working-time requirement, transport capacities and production costs in general. Due to the high water content in relation of the harvest area freshly gathered corn cobs are often not storable and have to be dried for further utilisation. The combustion of corn cobs is technically possible, but to fulfil the legally required emission limits, especially for dust emissions, is challenging, because of the chemical composition of corn cobs.
