Abstract:
Many surveys of wild animals (e.g. spotlight or infrared detection) are bound to forest roads, since a sufficiently large area can only be covered by using a car. For such investigations, it is relevant to know whether the roads have an influence on the result. To reduce encounters with humans, it is possible that roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) avoid anthropogenically used areas or visit them at different times. In closed forest areas, however, the abundant vegetation along the paths can be an attractive source of food, so that the deer prefer to stay there. Based on the data of a photo-trap monitoring in the investigation areas Hunsrück and Bienwald, the influence of the route network on the spatial and temporal use of the deer was determined. The captivity (deer per trapping day) of the photo traps serves as a reference for the use in the area. To clarify was: At what time is the activity (mobility) highest? Does the captivity of the photo traps correlate with their distance to the path? Does the distance to the path correlate with the time of maximum activity? The result is to be used as a guide for wild ecology research projects, which orientate their study design on the path network. The deer were more active during the night than during the day and showed the highest activity at dusk. A connection with a deliberate spatial use / avoidance could not be shown. The road network does not seem to influence research projects which do not align their study design with the path network of comparable areas. Photo traps can capture only open areas up to a certain distance. It is not possible to ascertain the reason for the stay, the length of the stay outside the case sensor and behavioral changes (increased stay in the covering structure, active flight through disturbance events). The presence or absence of deer at one location could lead to incorrect conclusions.
